You're going to be normal again. Trust me, you'll be fine.
When you go through ankle or foot surgery, in your case, Achilles tendon repair, you're
going to have swelling, stiffness, pain, and loss range of motion, that's normal. You will be
in a pain for 5-7 days but then it'll get better. After 6-8 weeks at home and being
non-weight bearing, you will be referred to physical therapy for your ankle and foot surgery
rehabilitation.
From what I have seen with my patients after ankle or foot surgery, the first week is very
uncomfortable but by the second and third week, most are doing pretty well. So give it
some time. For you, it will be tough the first 8 weeks because you won't be able to put
much weight on your foot. Once the doctor clears you for full weight bearing, things will be
better.
What most people don't realize is that ankle or foot surgery takes a lot longer to heal than
what you would expect. Most of what I have seen is about 6 to 9 months before you actually
feel "normal" again. However, having said that, it doesn't mean you have to be in
excruciating pain everyday. There are a lot of things you can do for your ankle or foot to
make it more comfortable.
One of the things we do is use acupressure to relax the deeper ankle muscles. Once the
muscles are relax, we work on the joints that are stiff, putting them on slack to relax them
and alleviate any tensions in there. We then take you through a series of stabilizing
exercises to help strengthen the ankle and foot muscles so you won't have to compensate
so much with your other leg. That's usually what causes the tightness and stiffness in your
other leg after ankle or foot surgery.
